The Walloon Government has taken important decisions to secure the future of its Charleroi and Liège airports, reconciling economic development with respect for the environment and residents' quality of life.
For Brussels South Charleroi Airport, the aim is to enable controlled growth over the next 20 years through the renewal of the environmental permit. This permit includes ambitious measures, such as the construction of modern infrastructure, enhanced monitoring of air quality and noise, as well as strict regulation of operating hours, notably through a gradual reduction of late arrivals after 11pm, coupled with a declining overall quota.
In addition, green pricing will be introduced from 2026 to encourage airlines to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. Penalties for exceeding noise standards are also being toughened, with fines of up to €10,000 per violation, with zero tolerance.
Minister-President Adrien Dolimont points out that Charleroi is a crucial economic engine for Wallonia, with more than 3,000 direct jobs and more than 10 million passengers a year.
In the same spirit, the Walloon Government has legally secured the single permit of Liège Airport, following a review that reduces legal risks and improves environmental conditions. This approach ensures the continuity of activities and supports the logistics and economic development of the region.
MR ministers stress the importance of combining economic growth with environmental responsibility, in order to build a sustainable future for Walloons while respecting their living environment. These decisions reflect a determination to support airport infrastructure through innovation, transparency and a balance between development and quality of life.
