The day after the agreement reached at the budget conclave, Brussels Minister-President Boris Dilliès presented to Parliament the assessment of the government's first eight months in action, as well as the next steps.
Minister-President Boris Dilliès: “Everything is being done to stick to our budgetary trajectory and free up resources to make Brussels more pleasant on a daily basis for those who live, work and travel here. We must continue to be efficient and live up to our responsibilities. We have two and a half years left to implement our government agreement: every month counts.”
Every day, Brussels spends €1.5 million repaying its debt. Since taking office in February 2026, the Government has made sticking to the budgetary trajectory a priority. €522 million in savings have been achieved over the 2026-2027 period. Compared to 2024, half of the efforts needed to reach balance by 2029 have been made.
These efforts will continue: a recruitment freeze in the civil service, concentrating subsidies on the most structuring projects, and controlling spending.
The aim is to restore balance while continuing to invest in what concretely improves quality of life in Brussels: more safety and cleanliness, better-quality public spaces, and a more attractive, accessible and mobile capital.
Specifically:
- On the fiscal front, the Government has chosen to support purchasing power and strengthen the appeal of Brussels, particularly for the middle class. The BE HOME premium will be doubled and the additional personal income tax surcharge will be reduced by one percentage point.
- On mobility, the Avenue Louise tunnels — Bailli and Vleurgat — will be kept, with two lanes of traffic in each direction. A study will be launched to redevelop the surface of Avenue Louise, with a strong ambition for the quality and appeal of the public space.
- On cleanliness, the first underground “sorting spaces” will be installed as early as 2027. The Stations Plan will also be reinforced to improve safety, cleanliness and the quality of the areas around Brussels' main railway stations.
- On protecting Brussels residents, resources for the fire brigade will be increased and the construction of the new headquarters fire station is confirmed.
