Mobility, health, security: 3 priorities for seniors

11/04/2024
In brief

The MR Seniors Committee is championing three priorities for the elderly: sustainable and non-punitive mobility, and access to quality care. It is also calling for stronger protection against scams, particularly online and by phone.

At what age does one become a “senior”? At what point are we called “elderly”? After all, are we not simply people who are a little older? Citizens with concerns, desires and needs. Worries too. Sometimes close to the “young” (but what is a young person...?).

The election campaign has begun. An opportunity for us, the “elderly”, to recall a few priorities.

Together with the MR Seniors Committee, we want to focus on 3 themes:

  1. Mobility. The freedom to move is a foundation of life in society. This mobility is essential for doing sport, enjoying leisure activities, visiting cultural venues, seeing family, and so on. A public transport network coordinated between the different levels of power is therefore essential. The MR wants sustainable and non-punitive mobility. The MR supports citizens' freedom of choice and technological neutrality, provided the chosen technology is environmentally friendly (electric vehicles, e-fuels, etc.).

  2. Health. Even though the Belgian healthcare system is recognised as one of the best in Europe, we must ensure better access to quality medicine. While taking the ageing population into account, it is also important to set certain boundaries while keeping patients' well-being and freedom of choice at the centre of policy. Home care services must be supported, and care homes (retirement homes and nursing homes) must remain accessible and of high quality.

  3. Security. The MR wants to better protect the elderly from scams. The safety of people and property is crucial for all our fellow citizens and is of particular importance for the elderly, due to the greater vulnerability of some of them. Special attention must be paid to preventing and protecting seniors from scams and attempted scams online or by phone.
