The Frontoffice eFiling platform will make patent applications easier, more efficient and more secure for innovative businesses. A new step in administrative simplification to support economic operators.
This new application, developed in collaboration with the European Patent Office and the Benelux partners, marks a significant step forward in the digital transformation of Belgian public services. It allows businesses, professionals and citizens to file their patent applications and documents simply, quickly and securely with the Belgian Office for Intellectual Property.
David Clarinval, Minister of Economy: “Innovation is one of the pillars of our companies' competitiveness. With Frontoffice eFiling, we are giving them a modern digital tool that simplifies patent filing, reduces administrative formalities and strengthens their capacity to innovate. This is an important step in the digital transformation of our public services. ”
Frontoffice eFiling replaces the old eOLF system, in service since 1999, and offers many advantages: an intuitive interface and simplified forms, direct access with no software installation required, enhanced security through multi-factor authentication, faster processing of applications, and fewer administrative steps. The system also fosters collaboration within organisations and provides more efficient tracking of submitted documents.
Initially, the new version of the electronic desk will be accessible to patent agents and lawyers, who account for more than 90% of Belgian patent filings. In a second phase, it will also be opened up to businesses and citizens, who will be able to submit their applications directly online, without needing an agent or paper forms.
In practice, an agent will now be able to file a patent without having to install specific software, manage technical updates or use physical chip cards. Staff at an agent's office will also be able to contribute to the preparatory work in a secure, collaborative environment.
This development saves time and makes life easier for businesses and individuals, who will eventually also be able to submit their applications entirely electronically.
In 2024, 8,792 patent applications were already filed electronically, representing 92% of all Belgian filings. These figures reflect the dynamism of innovation in Belgium and confirm the importance of a modern, accessible tool to support intellectual property.
Nido project: continuous improvement
The patent management system is constantly seeking improvement and listens to user feedback. That is why anyone interested in IT development or the simplification of patent management can submit a project aimed at modernising the Benelux patent platform. This initiative is part of the NIDO project. (https://www.nidolab.be/fr/challenges/benelux-patent-platform-2030-1)
