This Thursday, Aurélie Czekalski, Brussels MP, was a guest on the programme +d'Actu on BX1 to debate the postponement of one of the milestones of the Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) concerning certain types of vehicles in the Brussels Region.
In favour of this postponement, she stressed the importance of finding the right balance between environmental requirements and the economic and social reality of Brussels residents. Improving air quality is a priority for the Brussels MR and we do not question the principle of the LEZ, but everyone must be given time to adapt to these new restrictions. Postponing this phase of the LEZ is necessary because it is far too strict and contains no accompanying measures to avoid penalising people who cannot afford to replace their vehicle.
For her, the LEZ is part of the solution but will not be enough on its own to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Brussels Region. To accelerate our Region's energy transition, the rollout of the low emissions zone must go hand in hand with the renovation of buildings responsible for over 60% of CO2 emissions, a network of safe, fast and clean public transport at all times of day and evening, soft mobility alternatives, an efficient network of public charging points, and so on.
It is essential to support citizens and businesses through this transition, rather than abruptly penalising them. The MR continues to advocate for a pragmatic environmental policy that takes account of purchasing power and mobility alternatives that are genuinely accessible to everyone.
