Winners of the 2024 Walloon Merit Awards

16/09/2024
In brief

The Walloon Government honoured 15 individuals and associations at the 2024 Walloon Merit Awards. Sport, culture, research and local heritage were recognised, including some posthumous tributes.

As part of the Walloon Festivities, the Walloon Government has decided to pay tribute to men and women who embody excellence, passion and Walloon commitment. These are people who proudly showcase the values of our beautiful region across every corner of Belgium and beyond our borders.

Through their remarkable journeys, these award winners have not only excelled in their respective fields; they have also inspired through their determination, talent and ability to rise to challenges. Whether athletes pushing the limits of endurance, artists opening windows onto new worlds, esteemed chefs awakening our taste buds, or political and civic figures who have shaped our society today, they remind us that success is built with passion and boldness.

These 15 individuals or associations will receive different distinctions depending on their career. An award will be presented by each of the ministers present for the occasion.

1. Paul Furlan, posthumously

Title: Commander

Minister presenting the award: Adrien Dolimont

Paul Furlan, originally from Binche, dedicated his life to public service with exceptional energy and commitment. Elected as a Walloon MP in 1999, mayor of Thuin from 2000, and Walloon socialist minister for local authorities and tourism from 2009 to 2017, he left his mark on every role he held.

Paul Furlan was a man close to everyone, driven by a genuine vision for our municipalities, our towns, and for the local authorities which he managed to reform with a rare sense of commitment. His tireless work left a lasting legacy: important reforms and numerous initiatives that continue to benefit our region and our 262 municipalities today.

Behind the politician was also a warm, jovial man who led his life with infectious enthusiasm. A life he lived at full speed until 10 April this year, when Paul Furlan was 60 years old.

  1. Anne d'Ieteren

Title: Commander

Minister presenting the award: Jacqueline Galant

Anne d'Ieteren was six-time Belgian dressage champion with her horse “Juroto”. She made a name for herself in the equestrian world thanks to her talent and competitive spirit. But her legacy goes far beyond the titles she won.

Under her leadership, Belgium shone on the international stage, winning six Paralympic medals, three of them gold, and captivating an entire country at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Still driven by her desire for inclusion and excellence, Anne continues to inspire in her current role leading the Ligue Handisport francophone. Her work and dedication have been recognised on numerous occasions, including with the Order of Merit of the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee and, most recently, the National Order of the Legion of Honour.

Just eight months after his accident, he discovered wheelchair racing and has continued to shine on the track ever since.

And brilliantly so! After being world record holder over 200m and 400m, Maxime won the gold medal in the 400m at the Paris Paralympic Games, followed by the 100m. Title: Officer

Minister presenting the award: Adrien Dolimont

Under his leadership, the team achieved a historic performance in the last Tour de France, winning three stages, something that had never happened before. This was largely thanks to the exploits of Eritrean Biniam Girmay, who became the first rider from sub-Saharan Africa to win a Tour de France stage, and the green jersey shortly after.

This achievement is not only a sporting victory, it is a symbol of openness, diversity and progress in cycling, a sport in which boundaries have been pushed thanks to this man's exemplary vision and management.
