On 26 February, the European Commission presented its proposed directives as part of the 1st “Omnibus” package. The aim is to simplify the European rules on sustainability reporting and investment that businesses are subject to.
“On 12 March, in my capacity as Minister for Economy, together with the Flemish Minister for Industry, I will have the opportunity to express Belgium's position on these initiatives at the European Competitiveness Council”.
The European Commission wants to simplify legislation adopted under the 2019 Green Deal, the implementation of which has sparked much criticism regarding its impact on the competitiveness of Belgian and European businesses.
By launching this process, the Commission intends to achieve an unprecedented simplification effort before the end of its mandate, reducing administrative burdens by at least 25%, and by at least 35% for SMEs.
Minister of Economy David Clarinval: “I warmly welcome the Commission's initiatives. The texts targeted for simplification considerably increase the administrative and financial burdens on our businesses. It is necessary to re-evaluate and simplify them, as they excessively complicate the lives of our businesses and hold back their investment and growth.”
The changing geopolitical context means that Belgian and European businesses are currently facing unprecedented economic challenges. It is essential to act on several levels so that they regain competitiveness. One pillar of our strategy is to ease excessive regulatory requirements.
It is therefore urgent that we speak out at European level in favour of postponing the entry into force of these texts, so that Belgian businesses have clarity on the deadlines, and then take the time needed for a thorough overhaul.
David Clarinval: “I firmly believe that social responsibility and economic dynamism can be reconciled. Instead of piling more burdens onto our businesses, it is time to support them in their transition, while improving their competitiveness. This requires a collaborative approach, where businesses, governments and European institutions work together to create effective and tailored solutions.”
