Major post-election interview with Georges-Louis Bouchez in L'Echo and De Tijd

20/07/2024
In brief

Georges-Louis Bouchez believes that Wallonia is now more right-wing than Flanders following the MR's victory. He criticises a left that has become the “spokesperson for minorities” and calls for the modernisation of French-speaking Belgium. He wants to govern for everyone, backed by the agreement with Les Engagés and the federal and Brussels discussions.

Since the victory of 9 June, MR President Georges-Louis Bouchez had not yet given a major interview to the written press. For this first occasion, the liberal spoke to L'Echo and De Tijd.

The MR President reflected on the liberals' major victory in the last elections. For Georges-Louis Bouchez, Wallonia is now, technically speaking, more right-wing than Flanders. He sees this as a sign of a change in mindset and of the fact that the MR has managed to speak to and convince everyone on everyday issues, particularly work, a value the left has lost for years. “The left cannot exist without victims, it has become the spokesperson for minorities. There is a PS state that must disappear,” he explains.

According to Georges-Louis Bouchez, French-speaking Belgium today oscillates between the 19th and 20th centuries; we are not pushing our capabilities far enough. Our regions must reform to perform better.

Finally, the liberal, the big winner, reminds everyone that he will govern for all citizens. He referred back to the historic agreement reached in Wallonia and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation with Maxime Prévot, as well as to the ongoing discussions at federal level and at Brussels regional level.
