Hungary chooses democracy and Europe

13/04/2026
In brief

The MR welcomes the historic victory of Péter Magyar and the Tisza party in the Hungarian parliamentary elections of 12 April 2026, putting an end to sixteen years of “illiberal drift” under Viktor Orbán. It sees this as a return of Hungary to democratic values, the rule of law and Europe, and declares itself ready to build “a renewed relationship” in the service of fundamental freedoms.

Dear journalists,
Dear journalists,
The Council of the Mouvement Réformateur welcomes the historic victory of Péter Magyar and the Tisza party in the Hungarian parliamentary elections of 12 April 2026.
After sixteen years of illiberal drift under Viktor Orbán, Hungarian citizens have clearly expressed their attachment to democracy, the rule of law and European values. This result is a victory for Hungary, and a victory for Europe.
Hungary is today rejoining the camp of those who want to build a powerful Europe, capable of carrying weight in the world.
The Mouvement Réformateur, which has always championed a strong, sovereign European Union founded on respect for fundamental freedoms, welcomes the signal sent by this election. The liberal forces who supported Péter Magyar throughout the campaign can be proud: illiberalism is not inevitable. When peoples are free to express themselves, they overwhelmingly choose freedom.
Orbán's retreat has lastingly weakened Europe. By blocking essential decisions, sowing discord within the Union and undermining European cohesion in the face of strategic challenges, he has made the continent less strong, less united and less sovereign.
The MR warmly congratulates Péter Magyar and offers him its full solidarity in the reforms that lie ahead. Bringing Hungary fully back into the European project and restoring citizens' trust in their institutions: the task is immense, but the mandate is clear.
The MR stands ready to build a renewed relationship with Hungary, in the service of our shared values.
The Council of the MR.
