Georges-Louis Bouchez wants to give Belgium a major public bank-insurer capable of carrying weight, investing, and protecting our economic interests.
For too long, our country has lacked strategic ambition. The rapprochement between Belfius and Ethias meets exactly this need: creating a powerful financial player, with a decision-making centre in Brussels, capable of supporting major economic transitions and strengthening our autonomy against foreign groups.
“This project rests on solid industrial logic. Both institutions already share a largely common customer base: municipalities, public bodies, individuals, and clear synergies exist, particularly in digitalisation, networks and management. By joining forces, Belfius and Ethias can generate significant economies of scale and improve their competitiveness,” explains the MR President.
Beyond performance, this is also a strategic issue. In a context where many Belgian financial players are coming under foreign control, this rapprochement helps preserve decision-making centres in Belgium and avoid a gradual weakening of our economic sovereignty.
Finally, this operation is also beneficial for public finances. It would increase Belfius's valuation, maximise revenue for the State, and strengthen long-term dividends.
