Last week, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Employment, Economy and Agriculture David Clarinval received the trade union organisations representing the workers of Tupperware Belgium, a company recently declared bankrupt.
During this meeting, the union representatives expressed their concerns about several aspects of the company's management before its bankruptcy, in particular:
- Excessive use of temporary unemployment by the company before the cessation of activities.
- An absence of an effective decision-making centre in Belgium, making it difficult to anticipate the difficulties encountered.
- Excessive economic dependence of the Belgian headquarters on the group's other European and global entities.
David Clarinval, Federal Minister for Employment: “I have taken note of the concerns raised by the union representatives and assured them that these matters will be thoroughly examined. I have therefore instructed my administration to analyse the situation and formulate proposals to improve monitoring and control mechanisms in similar cases. The government remains attentive to the situation of the affected workers and will ensure that all legal and social provisions regarding employment support and protection are respected.”
