Thanks to the Mouvement Réformateur and the Arizona government, a lifetime ban on entering Belgian territory will now apply to terrorists and radicalised individuals!
The safety of our fellow citizens is an essential priority for the MR. This measure is a concrete tool to prevent the return to our territory of individuals who pose a proven threat to our country. It sends a clear signal: Belgium tolerates no compromise with those who endanger the lives of our fellow citizens.
- For the MR, those who pose a danger to our safety must not be given the opportunity to return to or remain illegally on Belgian territory. This measure is a concrete tool to prevent the return to our territory of individuals who pose a proven threat to national security.
- Safety is an essential priority for the MR, and that requires strict measures when necessary. We want to put an end to laxity. This measure sends a clear signal: Belgium tolerates no compromise with those who endanger the lives of our fellow citizens.
- The left-wing parties (PS, Ecolo-Groen and PTB) and Défi incomprehensibly voted against this important text that protects the Belgian people.
At the end of April, the federal Parliament adopted Minister Van Bossuyt's bill imposing a lifetime entry ban for terrorists and radicalised individuals listed by OCAM.
The left-wing parties (PS, Ecolo-Groen, PTB) and Défi incomprehensibly voted against this important text that protects the Belgian people.
For the MR, those who pose a danger to our safety must not be given the opportunity to return to or remain illegally on Belgian territory.
Before this adoption, an entry ban could only be imposed for a limited period. This new legislation makes it possible, in the most serious cases, to impose a lifetime entry ban on convicted terrorists, hate preachers and potentially violent extremists who are staying illegally on Belgian territory. An OCAM analysis will always precede this type of decision.
Thanks to this reform, when a person is subject to an entry ban, they will be recorded and registered in the Schengen Information System (SIS) and the police's General National Database (BNG). They will no longer be allowed to enter the Schengen area or Belgium. The Immigration Office will be able to refuse their visa or residence permit applications.
The new law builds on a clear policy shift already undertaken by the current government. Whereas entry bans were previously limited to twenty years, the Immigration Office had already been tasked with systematically imposing longer periods in cases of serious threats to public order or national security:
- in 2025, 42 entry bans of twenty years or more were imposed. That is more than double compared to 2023 (15) and an increase compared to 2024 (33);
- In recent years, the entry ban was limited to 20 years. In 2025, a 30-year ban was imposed for the first time;
- In total, 5,998 entry bans of varying duration were issued in 2025, an increase compared to the previous year.
Safety is an essential priority for the MR. This measure is a concrete tool to prevent the return to our territory of individuals who pose a proven threat to our country. It sends a clear signal: Belgium tolerates no compromise with those who endanger the lives of our fellow citizens.
