When socialism rhymes with conspiracy theories

09/02/2026
In brief

The MR firmly condemns a PS post relating to the Epstein affair, deemed conspiratorial and manipulative. It accuses the party of fuelling suspicion towards institutions by omitting established facts. The MR demands the withdrawal of the post and an apology, in the name of a public debate based on facts.

Following its Council meeting this Monday morning, the Mouvement Réformateur condemns with the utmost firmness the post published this weekend on the PS's social media.

This post refers to the Epstein affair. In doing so, the PS is spreading unacceptable insinuations and dangerous conflations.

By endorsing this kind of content, the PS is fuelling conspiracy theories without any scruple or caution. The PS is thus knowingly undermining trust in institutions by maintaining a climate of generalised suspicion.

In its post, the PS curiously omits the facts already duly established. Beyond its sickening moral dimension, the Epstein case has so far implicated:

  • Former Norwegian Labour Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland, prosecuted over suspicions of “aggravated corruption”;

  • Morgan McSweeney, Labour chief of staff to the current British government, who appointed the now controversial senior Labour figure Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the USA;

  • The same Peter Mandelson, against whom Scotland Yard has opened a criminal investigation into possible transfers of sensitive information to Jeffrey Epstein while he was a Minister of Her Majesty.

  • Finally, the PS avoids condemning the greedy indulgence of Jack Lang, a socialist and former Minister of Culture, who was pushed into a shameful departure by the Quai d'Orsay.

For the Mouvement Réformateur, this manipulative communication is deeply unworthy of a party that often lectures others and repeatedly presents itself as the herald of democracy and guardian of morality.
Today's societal challenges demand exchanges based on facts, not the spreading of rumours or insinuations.

The PS refuses to remove this post.

By this refusal, the PS and its President dishonour themselves.

The MR calls on the PS and its President to regain the restraint and rigour that citizens are entitled to expect from a political party, by withdrawing this post and offering an apology.

The MR will continue to defend a public debate that is dignified, rational and, where necessary, robust, but always respectful of the truth.
