“Thanks to your overwhelming support, the local elections have shown that the MR is indeed the leading party in Wallonia and Brussels. Compared to 2018, the MR is gaining ground in every Walloon province and in Brussels. This success, following that of the June 2024 elections, confirms our leadership.
A huge thank you for your trust. I would also like to thank all the candidates, local elected representatives, staff and all our members and activists who worked tirelessly. Their efforts were not in vain.
This new victory shows that, during the local election campaign, the MR took your everyday concerns into account: safety, cleanliness, fair taxation, employment, education and mobility.
The blue wave has shifted the political centre of gravity. Mayoral seats have changed hands in several towns such as Tournai, Verviers, Thuin, Tubize, Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve and Watermael-Boitsfort. The MR now has 115 mayors and is present in 167 majorities. Given that negotiations are still ongoing, this number can only rise, and it is already more than in 2018! At the same time, our gains of nearly 10 points in all major cities show our roots as a broad popular movement.
We must, however, remain vigilant. While in Flanders the far right's rise to power in two municipalities is rightly a cause for concern, it is astonishing to see that in Brussels and Wallonia, the left is negotiating with the far left. The keys to public administration cannot be handed to people who support totalitarian regimes and violate major democratic principles. An alliance with the far left is, moreover, a guarantee of financial ruin for the municipality concerned. The left, in its electioneering, must stop this reckless course that is leading us over the edge.
For our part, your trust honours and obliges us. We will continue the work already begun in Wallonia and in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. In Brussels and at federal level, it is high time to conclude government agreements to deliver on the many proposals in our programme. You expect decisions on lowering the tax burden, better rewarding work, employment policy, healthcare and extending nuclear power. You expect concrete results. We now have 5 years to convince you that your choice was the right one."
