On a proposal from the President, the MR Council unanimously decided to organise elections for the presidency of the Mouvement Réformateur, with results to be announced during the week of 15 July. The electoral commission will meet immediately afterwards to establish the voting procedures.
During this Council meeting, President Georges-Louis Bouchez indicated that he is standing for re-election.
As a reminder, in October 2023 the MR Council extended Georges-Louis Bouchez's mandate as MR President by one year, with the term set to end on 30 November 2024.
The MR Council believes that this still-distant deadline could harm the smooth progress of the ongoing negotiations, particularly at federal level. After the 2019 elections, the formation of the federal government was indeed significantly delayed by the internal electoral processes organised within several parties. Our country needs stability.
Presidential elections will therefore be held electronically, with results announced during the week of 15 July. The electoral process will be launched in the coming days, with a call for candidacies.
The MR Council has also decided to bring forward the other internal elections, originally planned for the end of 2025. Elections to renew the presidencies of local branches, district federations and provincial federations will take place during the first half of 2025, immediately after the new municipal majorities are installed. This aims to clarify political action at all levels.
