The Government of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation has adopted, on second reading, two draft decrees aimed at strengthening teacher training, both in terms of digital skills and the implementation of the new curriculum frameworks.
These decisions are fully in line with the ambition to guarantee every pupil quality education in step with changes in society. As a reminder, from next school year, first-year secondary school pupils will follow 2 periods of digital training.
An ambitious plan for teachers' digital skills
From the 2026-2027 school year, a new training scheme will be introduced to enable teachers who do not yet have basic digital skills to acquire them.
This programme will reach up to 20,000 teachers over three years, or around 22% of the teaching staff. It will cover the five key areas of the European DigComp framework: information search, collaboration, content creation, responsible use and problem-solving, including issues related to artificial intelligence.
Organised during school hours, the training will combine one day of in-person sessions with an online module, with an approach tailored to each participant's level.
Enhanced training to support the new curriculum frameworks
At the same time, the Government is continuing to roll out training related to the new curriculum frameworks in secondary education. From 2026-2027, two additional half-days of training will be organised for the teachers concerned. This training aims to ensure practical adoption of the new curricula and to support teaching teams in implementing them.
The scheme will be spread over several years to take account of the pace of reform implementation and realities on the ground.
These measures represent a significant investment (20 million euros), mobilised as part of the resources devoted to continuing professional training for teachers.
“Digital technology is no longer an option: it is a fundamental skill for learning, teaching and understanding the world. It is our responsibility to give every teacher the means to guide their pupils through this transition. Training teachers means investing directly in pupils' success. We are choosing demanding, modern and better-equipped education to meet today's and tomorrow's challenges”, concluded Valérie Glatigny, Minister of Education.
