After years of deadlock, Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels have finally reached an agreement on introducing a joint digital road vignette for light vehicles. From 1 May 2027, all road users, both Belgians and foreigners, will contribute to the financing of the infrastructure they use.
For Adrien Dolimont, Minister-President of the Walloon Government in charge of Budget, Finance, International Relations and Animal Welfare, this reform is based on a simple principle: a fairer contribution, without increasing the tax burden on Walloons.
“A good tax reform is not about always asking for more. It is about distributing the effort more fairly. With this joint vignette, we are moving from a system where the cost of infrastructure fell mainly on Walloons towards a system where every user, without discrimination, contributes to the roads they use.”
The vignette will be available in several formats (24 hours, 10 days, 1 month, 2 months or 1 year) and will be fully digital. Its annual price will be set at €100 for Euro 4 and newer vehicles, €125 for older vehicles and €90 for zero-emission vehicles.
For the MR, this reform is part of a broader overhaul of vehicle taxation, which will be presented in the coming weeks. The goal is clear: continue easing the tax burden while ensuring better-maintained roads and fairer financing.
After lowering registration fees on the purchase of a sole and main residence and the announced reform of inheritance tax, the Walloon Government is continuing on the same course: lower taxes, fairer taxation and promises kept.
