The MR firmly stands by its support for those who want to turn the page on the mullahs’ regime. On Thursday 5 November, the liberal group welcomed Prince Reza Pahlavi at the Chamber of Representatives, followed by a reception at the party headquarters in the presence of members of the Iranian diaspora. An initiative led by Georges-Louis Bouchez.
For our President, the criticism of this meeting reveals a contradiction: “Knowing that the Iranian ambassador can remain in place without any difficulty, knowing that our country still has a prisoner exchange agreement with Iran, I am surprised that receiving Mr Pahlavi creates a problem for some.” His priority is clear: that the mullahs’ regime in Iran falls.
Reza Pahlavi, for his part, called for the Iranian opposition to unite. He is asking Belgium and the European Union to strengthen economic sanctions, support Iranians’ access to the internet, and diplomatically isolate Tehran.
By maintaining this invitation within its parliamentary group, the MR asserts an unambiguous stance: engaging in dialogue with the opposition and refusing any leniency towards the Iranian regime.
