The parliamentary inquiry committee, chaired by federal MR MP Pierre Jadoul, is requesting an extension of its mandate.
After long months of hearings, which fully occupied the federal MPs, they must now focus on drafting a report that lives up to the issues at stake. Given the scale of the information gathered, the diversity of the testimonies heard and the wealth of expert analysis, the committee members have mandated their chairman, Pierre Jadoul, to ask the Chamber's Conference of Presidents for an extension of the mandate until 31 December next.
“The density and complexity of the material gathered during the hearings require rigorous analysis, in order to formulate clear, solid and useful conclusions and recommendations. The requested extension is therefore essential to guarantee a quality final report, true to the scale and depth of the work carried out since the start of our mission,” explains MP Pierre Jadoul, on behalf of the Committee.
Beyond technical and institutional considerations, the Committee members stress that their work is above all part of a pursuit of truth and recognition for the victims. “We have a moral responsibility towards those who had the courage to testify. Giving them the place they deserve in this report means refusing to forget and laying the foundations for a form of reparation, undoubtedly symbolic but essential,” stresses Pierre Jadoul. The Committee will therefore continue its work with the rigour required, but also with the empathy this mission demands, so that justice may be served, at least through words and remembrance.
