The attack on the synagogue in Liège, on the night of 8 to 9 March, deeply shocked people far beyond Liège.
This serious act comes on top of other recent incidents, such as the desecration of Jean Gol's grave, and shows that antisemitism is a worrying reality in Liège.
And in the face of this, words are no longer enough.
For Liège MP Diana Nikolic, it is no longer just about condemning, but about acting, particularly at the level of the City of Liège. “Antisemitism is not an opinion. It is a hatred that must be fought. Attacking the Jewish community of Liège is attacking all Liège residents, our freedoms and our democracy.”
MR Liège has tabled a motion calling on the City to make a clear commitment to fighting antisemitism by:
- joining the European strategy against antisemitism, as other cities have done
- drawing up a Liège action plan, built together with the Jewish community
- in particular mobilising the University of Liège in preventing and combating hatred
In Liège, the left regularly puts forward motions on problems or conflicts elsewhere in the world. Diana Nikolic has often warned of the risk of importing the seeds of these conflicts into the heart of the “Fiery City”. Today we see that this risk is real.
“We hope that all democrats on the Council will support this motion of communal and democratic interest,” concludes Diana Nikolic.
In Liège, as elsewhere, we refuse to let hatred take root.
