Against an international backdrop marked by profound change, MR President Georges-Louis Bouchez met with Dominique de Villepin, former French Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Prime Minister of France. This meeting, rich in exchanges, provided an opportunity to discuss major international issues, the strategic relationship between France and Belgium, and the future of the European project.
As the war in Ukraine continues, tensions in the Middle East intensify and global balances are being challenged, European diplomacy is being tested more than ever. It was against this backdrop that their discussions highlighted the importance of a strong, autonomous and strategically united Europe. Dominique de Villepin, known for his long-term geopolitical vision, stressed the need for Europe to assert itself as a balancing power, capable of defending its interests while remaining true to its values.
France and Belgium share a history, a language, values, but above all a shared responsibility in the face of European and global challenges. The Franco-Belgian relationship can enable strengthened cooperation in the areas of security, energy, defence and digital transition.
The discussions also highlighted the urgent need for structural reforms to make the European Union more agile, more democratic and more efficient in its decision-making.
This meeting with Dominique de Villepin reflects the President's determination to have an impact on the European debate alongside competent and ambitious partners. The MR will continue this commitment towards an influential Belgium within a strong, free and united Europe.
