Municipal councillor and vice-president of the CPAS of Anderlecht, Marcela Gori, wants elected officials, municipal councillors, aldermen and mayors to master at least French or Dutch in order to ensure effective governance and direct communication with citizens.
"You can't run a municipality with Google Translate. Political leaders must be able to understand the decisions they make and the texts they defend," explains Marcela Gori.
This proposal, widely covered in the press in recent days, follows the case of a Molenbeek alderman facing language difficulties. For the Mouvement Réformateur, it illustrates the need to place respect for institutions, competence and closeness to citizens back at the heart of local political life.
Through this initiative, Marcela Gori reaffirms a liberal conviction: an effective democracy requires representatives capable of understanding and communicating in the language of their municipality.
