In brief
Parliament has adopted a historic reform limiting unemployment benefits to 2 years for people fit for work. Exceptions exist for those over 55 with 30 years of career, aiming to boost employment.
Last night, after weeks and hours of debate, Parliament adopted a major reform of the Arizona government championed by the Minister of Employment, David Clarinval, which for the first time introduces a two-year limit on unemployment benefits for people fit for work. This is a historic vote!
This law provides for a gradual reduction of benefits, enhanced support towards employment and training in cooperation with the Regions, as well as exceptions for those over 55 with a career of at least 30 years.
David Clarinval: “I am delighted with the vote that took place this Thursday in the plenary session of Parliament. This historic reform transforms unemployment insurance into active insurance, focused on returning to work and accountability. It responds to current economic challenges while guaranteeing solid social protection.”
With this reform, the government makes beneficiaries more accountable, encourages a return to work, and aligns Belgium with European standards on labour market activation.
This bill fully embodies the spirit of the government agreement: taking responsibility, activating, and supporting people towards employment, for a more dynamic labour market and a fairer society.
