For the MR, science and technology are the keys to progress and well-being for all. Nuclear energy and nuclear applications in healthcare improve our lives every day. Georges-Louis Bouchez, MR President, visited the sck cen, the Belgian nuclear research centre in Mol. It enjoys an international reputation.
Over the coming decades, our electricity consumption will increase by more than 50%. "Producing more electricity and emitting less CO2. This is only possible if we combine renewable energy, such as wind turbines and solar panels, with nuclear energy that is beneficial for the climate," explains Mr Bouchez. "We should keep five nuclear power plants open and build new ones using the most modern technologies. This way, Belgium will remain strategically independent from other countries and electricity will remain affordable for everyone."
Building small reactors of the latest generation will help us achieve this goal. "They will be able to produce electricity for businesses in industrial zones," explains Mr Bouchez. "We will be able to treat nuclear waste to reuse it as fuel."
The MR President also went to see the MYRRHA research project: a future research reactor that will be powered by a particle accelerator. This technology will make it possible to make nuclear waste much less radioactive. It will also be able to produce radioisotopes for research and cancer treatment. MYRRHA will also make it possible to develop new forms of nuclear energy.
Nuclear applications are therefore essential. The MR is committed to this cutting-edge technology.
