On the eve of 21 July, Georges-Louis Bouchez gave an interview to La Dernière Heure to take stock of a year of major reforms driven by the MR. "Belgium is experiencing a historic shift": reform of the Forem, stronger activation of jobseekers, the end of lifelong inactivity, repeal of the 2003 law, merger of police zones, tougher rules on stripping nationality… "A wave of concrete measures that keep our promises and get the country moving!"
Georges-Louis Bouchez stresses the unprecedented cut in labour tax: €5 billion returned to workers. "We are restoring purchasing power, fighting the brain drain, and making Belgium more modern and attractive." For the MR President, the urgency is to go further: "The closer the elections get, the harder it will be to carry out reforms. We must implement and explain our measures. We are breaking taboos; the left will not dare turn back and put lifelong unemployment back in its 2029 election programme."
The MR President also warns of the need to better control our public spending: "Our problem is not revenue but spending. Too much state, too many rules: we need to free up energy, simplify life for businesses and refocus the state on its essential missions." On this point, he explains: "The best way to destroy social security is to be a socialist!"
Finally, on the momentum created by the future Prime Minister: "Having Bart De Wever as Prime Minister is the best way for Belgium not to become divided. We are in a country that is finally getting moving! He is the Prime Minister of a reformist government."
