Georges-Louis Bouchez was the guest on RTL info on Thursday 4 June, to answer the question of the week, posed by RTL : " Is Belgium going bankrupt? " He was clear : our country is on the brink of bankruptcy and, to avoid it, we must act now and act firmly on public spending rather than raising taxes further.
The President recalled that Belgium is the champion of public spending (55% of GDP) while already being one of the most heavily taxed countries, with Wallonia and Brussels having become the country's economic burden for lack of sufficient jobs. For our President, the only responsible path is more people in work and a genuine growth policy, not the permanent budgetary salami-slicing.
With the MR, there will be no VAT increase at the expense of workers and pensioners. Efforts must focus on cutting unnecessary public structures, abolishing outdated levels of government, and tackling abuse, rather than on new levies.
Finally, Georges-Louis Bouchez stood by the reforms in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, stressing that no teachers will be made redundant and that, on the contrary, 2,700 additional teachers will be needed. He also firmly condemned the violence on the fringes of the demonstrations, pointing to the responsibility of certain trade unions that exploit anger for their own ends.
