Formation of the Brussels Government: Georges-Louis Bouchez unblocks negotiations with an unprecedented solution

13/07/2025
In brief

After weeks of deadlock, negotiations for a Brussels government resume with six parties, including the MR. To guarantee a majority in both language groups, the MR proposes appointing a state secretary from civil society with no party affiliation, in order to quickly secure a fully-fledged government.

After several weeks of respectful and constructive discussions, negotiations to form a Brussels government will be able to resume this Monday with six parties, namely the MR, the PS, Les Engagés, Groen, Vooruit and Open VLD.

In order to install the government with a parliamentary majority in both language groups, as required by law, the MR will appoint, within its quota, a state secretary from civil society with no party affiliation. This will make it possible to gain the trust of the democratic parties represented in the Brussels Parliament.

The aim of this approach is to secure a fully-fledged Brussels government so as to address the challenges facing the capital region as quickly as possible.
