The Chamber's Energy Committee approves at first reading the extension of two nuclear reactors: a crucial step for Belgium's energy security
In the Energy Committee, MPs approved at first reading the ten-year extension of two nuclear reactors, a decision welcomed by the MR Group. After many months of negotiations, this extension marks a significant first step in guaranteeing Belgium's energy security.
As a reminder, the government agreement provided, at the MR's initiative, for a series of mechanisms, including the extension of 2 GW of nuclear power in the event of supply security problems. Today, this clause from the government agreement is being realised with the extension of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors.
However, the MR is aware that extending two reactors is not enough to meet Belgium's growing energy needs. With electricity consumption expected to increase by 35 to 50% over the next 15 years, it is urgent to guarantee our energy security for the years ahead.
“The MR welcomes this agreement, which represents a major step forward for the country's supply security. We must now continue on this path to revive the nuclear sector in Belgium, particularly through SMRs and new reactors. Time is running out, and the next government will need to act quickly to continue in this direction. Ten years is a beginning, not an end,” said MR federal MP Mathieu Bihet.
The MR reminds that to ensure our supply security, reduce prices, guarantee our energy independence and cut CO2 emissions, a balanced energy mix of renewables and nuclear power is essential.
