The City of Brussels has adopted a new regulation aimed at banning begging with children under 16 in the Pentagon and the Louise district. A measure championed by David Weytsman, who stresses that the goal is above all to protect children.
For the liberal alderman, no society worthy of the name can accept that minors are daily exposed to the street and to begging. This decision goes hand in hand with fieldwork carried out with social services to guide the families concerned towards appropriate support.
"Our decision aims to protect children, not to exclude them," stresses David Weytsman. An approach that places the best interests of the child at the heart of public action and refuses to normalise situations of extreme hardship that should never become the norm.
