Wallonia is reaffirming its commitment to international climate solidarity, on the occasion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Belém. The Government has announced a support programme of €13 million for 2026, aimed at helping the countries most affected by climate change.
On the occasion of the 30th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, currently taking place in Belém (Brazil), the Walloon Minister for Climate, Cécile Neven, announces the continuation of Wallonia's international climate financing for 2026.
To this end, the Walloon Government has approved a programme worth €13 million, aimed at supporting the most vulnerable countries. This funding will finance concrete actions for mitigation, adaptation and compensation for loss and damage linked to climate change.
This is in line with the Region's ongoing commitment to the Paris Agreement and forms part of the new international target adopted at COP29, to mobilise $300 billion a year by 2035 to help developing countries.
Balancing multilateralism and bilateralism
The 2026 programme is based on a balance between multilateral funding and bilateral projects.
Wallonia will thus continue its contributions to the Adaptation Fund, the Least Developed Countries Fund, the Loss and Damage Fund, as well as to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
At the same time, it will support on-the-ground projects through its partnerships with the international cooperation agency integrated within the international relations of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and Wallonia (APEFE) and the Belgian development agency Enabel.
Adrien Dolimont, Minister-President: “Wallonia is reaffirming a simple conviction: the climate transition can only succeed if it is shared. By mobilising €13 million to support the most vulnerable countries, we are choosing active solidarity focused on concrete solutions. It is by joining forces that we can build a safer and fairer future for everyone.”
Cécile Neven, Minister for the Air-Climate Plan: “Climate disruption knows no borders: by supporting those on the front line, Wallonia is acting responsibly and consistently, just as it already does on its own territory. We support programmes that have proven their worth and that help strengthen the stability, development and resilience of populations. ”
