Nearly five years after the July 2021 floods, the reconstruction of the Vesdre valley is picking up pace. After the initial emergency and safety works, Wallonia is entering the phase of major construction projects.
At the initiative of Anne-Catherine Dalcq, Minister for Nature and responsible for non-navigable waterways, 14 projects are under way or will start in 2026 in five municipalities: Chaudfontaine, Theux, Spa, Pepinster and Limbourg.
These works are designed to better protect residents and strengthen the valley's capacity to cope with flooding. They will also gradually reshape the waterway and its surroundings.
The aim is not to rebuild identically, but to create an area more resilient to flood risk. The planned developments are based on thorough hydraulic studies.
These projects mark the shift from an emergency approach to long-term reconstruction, for the benefit of the valley's residents.
