“Subsidised culture that does not seek out its audience is culture condemned to fail.”
In an interview with “LPost” and “21 News”, Georges-Louis Bouchez once again argued for a thorough overhaul of public funding for culture in Belgium. Following the controversy surrounding the Magritte du cinéma, he was able to reaffirm the party's position: art must not depend exclusively on state subsidies.
Unlike the United States, where the cultural industry thrives without a dedicated ministry, Belgium maintains a model in which projects funded by public money escape the logic of profitability. For the MR, it is time to encourage patronage, rethink subsidies and view culture as a viable industry.
The MR's vision is clear: art must win over its audience rather than live off the state.
