The death of young Fabian in Ganshoren is a tragedy that deeply affects us all. It is an unbearable ordeal, touching a family, a community, an entire country. As political representatives, we share the legitimate emotion this event has caused, and our thoughts go first to his loved ones, plunged into immense grief.
But in these moments of intense emotion, our role is also to show composure, clarity and responsibility. A tragedy must never be exploited, nor should we give in to hasty judgements or the pressure of the moment. The judicial investigation is under way. Only it can establish the facts rigorously, while respecting everyone's rights. It is essential to let justice do its work, in a calm and independent setting.
We firmly say no to police bashing. The police carry out a difficult task every day, often in extreme conditions, with courage, professionalism and a deep sense of duty. They are the bulwark of the rule of law. They protect our freedoms. They deserve our respect and our support.
But this support goes hand in hand with a demand. A supported police force must also be an exemplary police force. It is a matter of trust, ethics and legitimacy. Full clarity must be established, with transparency, about the circumstances of this tragedy. If mistakes were made, they must be sanctioned. If failings are identified, they must be corrected.
The Mouvement Réformateur stands for a society of justice, security and responsibility. We reject generalisations, shortcuts, hatred or political exploitation. Our priority is clear: that the truth be established, that justice be done, that people's dignity be respected, and that social peace be preserved.
Our thoughts are with Fabian's family. May their pain be heard. May their grief be respected. And may the truth alone guide the decisions to come.
