Administrative simplification
For every new regulation, two old or ineffective texts must be repealed.
Simplification, legitimacy, efficiency, responsibility: our institutions must evolve pragmatically, so that every euro spent benefits first and foremost the services delivered to citizens.
Belgium has 1 elected representative for every 800 inhabitants: time to rationalise.
Objective: cut useless or outdated regulations by 30%.
Merge small municipalities and enshrine municipality-CPAS mergers in law.
Reduce the number of elected officials
Belgium has just over 14,000 elected officials across all levels of government, more than 6,000 of them in the French-speaking part alone. That amounts to one elected representative for every 800 inhabitants, compared with the Netherlands (1 per 1,729), Ireland (1 per 2,393) or the United Kingdom (1 per 2,631).
Democracy naturally has a cost, but it must remain reasonable: savings are possible by reducing the number of elected officials.
Slim down our legislative arsenal
We are setting ourselves the objective of cutting regulations by 30%, tackling first and foremost those rules that are useless, ineffective or outdated. For every new regulation, two old or ineffective texts must be repealed.
French-speaking institutions must evolve around four key principles: simplification, legitimacy, efficiency and responsibility, with a rationalisation of structures based on subsidiarity and cooperative federalism.
Stronger municipalities
With 261 municipalities in Wallonia, most of them small entities with limited human and financial resources, we want to move beyond this fragmentation and build communities capable of investing in modern services, quality infrastructure and a more professional administration. Merging small municipalities is the best way to get there.
We also want to give legal status to municipality-CPAS mergers: a single administration, a single general director and a single financial director for both the municipality and the CPAS, while preserving the specific safeguards of social action.
