No one may invoke the rights and freedoms of our liberal democracy in order to attack those very rights and freedoms!
Liberal democracy combines individual freedoms with a shared destiny. The primacy of the rule of law is its very essence: the law reconciles individual aspirations with the interests of the greatest number.
Abolish the devolutive effect of the head-of-list vote: give the choice back to voters.
An impartial state that guarantees pluralism and stands against communitarianism.
A federal constituency and a more efficient allocation of powers.
Give the choice back to voters
Elections by universal suffrage are a key moment in our democracy. Liberals want Belgians living abroad to have full voting rights in regional elections.
Voters must genuinely be able to choose their representatives, without being constrained by technical mechanisms such as the devolutive effect of the head-of-list vote, which we want to abolish. Ending it strengthens the power of voters and reduces that of the parties, so that citizens truly choose their elected representatives.
Institutions at the service of citizens
Public services must perform as well as possible: flexible staff, redefined missions, sound management, evaluation and monitoring methods, and a medium- and long-term vision. The funding allocated to a public body must first and foremost serve citizens.
A neutral state against communitarianism
Since society encompasses a diversity of cultures, lifestyles and beliefs, the state must be the impartial guarantor of pluralism: separation of powers, protection of individual rights, separation of church and state, and the primacy of civil law over religious law.
A clear and strict application of neutrality is essential to counter communitarianism and the rise of the most extreme movements. No one may invoke the rights and freedoms of our liberal democracy in order to attack those very rights and freedoms.
A federal Belgium that works
The Mouvement Réformateur is committed to Belgium and to the principle of federal loyalty. We support a federal constituency allowing part of the federal MPs to be elected across the whole country: it is only sensible that federal MPs should be accountable to the entire country, and not solely to their own language community.
The MR also supports a pragmatic refederalisation of powers wherever it makes public action more effective, more coherent and clearer for citizens.
Liberals reaffirm their commitment to all French speakers in the country, to guaranteed autonomy for the German-speaking Community, and to Brussels reaching its full potential as an asset at the heart of Europe for the whole of Belgium.
